Sakura and the Many-Layered Sea: A Tale of Density (Physics Fables)

$3.00

The Physics Fables series introduces physics concepts without any math. It’s geared towards students ages 8-10, and is fully illustrated.

After doing research on what kinds of stories have the most impact educationally, I created these fables. The climax of the story always hinges on the main characters using the physics concepts involved. Having the characters use physics to achieve their goals has, unsurprisingly, been shown to make concepts the most memorable.

Throughout the story, I include little notes, questions, and activities that either explain concepts or suggest things for students to try. My goal here is to have there be more available than you need. You can absolutely just read through the story (especially the first time through) but if you find students are curious about anything, you can read the extra notes, explanations, or try some of the activities.

They’re also beautifully illustrated, professionally edited, and professionally formatted.

Here’s what this story is about:

Sakura has heard tales of the mermaids who live at the center of the sea. They will grant your wishes, if you are brave enough to find them. If they exist at all.

When her village is threatened, Sakura sets out alone in her little boat, determined to reach them and ask for their help.

She travels across The Many-Layered Sea, so called because it consists of layers of oil and water. On her voyage, she learns about density, and how and why her boat floats. She’ll need this newfound knowledge to reach the mermaids, who she has heard live in a deeper layer of the sea.

This is a story about courage, about changing course, and about how no voyage is wasted, even if the solution to our problems looks different than what we had imagined.

And here are the physics concepts it introduces:

  • Density

  • Buoyancy

  • Freezing Points of Liquids

  • Archimedes’ Principle

It includes hands-on activities related to the story (readers can try sending a message to the mermaids, too :)) and questions to guide thinking and discussion.

  • Designed for Ages 8-10
